How to be healthy in Sales

It’s no secret that one of the most high pressure jobs in any industry is Sales.   When it comes to success, having somewhat of a work/life balance makes a huge difference.

I’ve spent several years working closely with all sales types: the drive-thru addict, the chain smoker, the emotional wreck, the health nut, the runner and the nutritionist.  What set these individuals apart was that the most successful were the ones who took some time out of the day to focus on their health.  While the first three were successful in short bursts, the second three built on their success through their health leading to longevity – occupationally and physically.

A huge part of this career is TRAVEL – driving from client meeting to client meeting and flying all over the country can affectWoman Eating Fast Food While Driving all aspects of your life, mainly sleep and diet.   Add in smoking, drinking, stress and inertia, and this job becomes a health hazard.

But just like Sales is a mindset, so is being healthy.  You can’t just want to be, you need to act.  The salespeople I’ve worked with that were healthy just had it in their heads that ‘this is what they do everyday.’    Being in sales does have the luxury of flexible hours, but sitting or napping during those hours is extremely counterproductive.  I know you may be tired a lot from this type of job, but the sedentary lifestyle can contribute to the fatigue.

How To Be Healthy in Sales

First and foremost, we need to look at diet.  Exercise is very important especially in a typically inactive occupation, however, no amount of exercise can undo a poor diet.  I realize that a “healthy diet” is going to be unpopular, but suck it up.  These are the changes you need to make in order to stay alive long enough to catch that big fish.

1. Ditch the bag of trans-fat crap.  You know what I mean.  It’s easy to pick up a bag of chips and keep it in the front seat next to you in case you get hungry. This is a gateway drug for bad eating habits.

2. Instead, stock up on protein.  String cheese, protein bars, turkey roll-ups, pepperoni slices, etc.   Unlike the chips, these will fill you up faster and you will eat less.

3. Mix in a carrot stick or 3.  I know veggies aren’t the most popular food for many people, but if you’re gonna grab unconsciously for food, at least let it be good for you.

4. NO MORE SODA.  Even diet soda.  The regular is filled with calories and added sugar and the other is filled with chemical.  Get an unsweetened iced tea and add a low calorie sweetener.

5. Find healthier drive-thru options.  Yes.  They exist. And taste good.  The good folks over at Spark People did the homework for you with their list of The 22 Healthiest Fast Foods.

Now, on to exercise.  For a job where you are required to sit behind the wheel most days, finding a good 30 minutes to get the blood flowing can be challenging, but it can be done, even if it’s not 30 minutes in a row.

1. Bend the knees every chance you get.  When you get out of the car, do 5 squats.  Squats engage your muscles and send blood to the heart.

2. Squeeze the glutes. You’re sitting there anyway, why not tone your butt?  Squeeze the cheeks for a count of 10, release, then repeat.

3. Auto Abs.  Pull your stomach in as far as you can – like you are trying to touch your spine with your belly button, then slowly release.  It’s like doing a sit-up sitting up!

4. Engage your muscles.  Flex your arms and pecs and hold for a 10 count then release.  Shrug your shoulders, hold for 5, and then slowly release.

5. Park further away from your appointment’s front door.  Even in the Winter!  A longer walk is cardio.  And if it’s cold outside, the walk combined with your body trying to get warm will burn more calories.

Yes, people will look.  Maybe even stare.  But you are the one increasing blood flow to your heart and brain, not them!  Making these small changes will help you be more alert, more energetic and more creative – all the things necessary to be successful in sales.
